Trust Me.....If Limey can break his silence on movies and prepares to write a Blog on it... that's gotta mean something. And it is.
Whether you've seen it or you haven't.... whether you liked it or not ... the truth is....and it will prevail for time to come.... and whenever you''' think about movies... especially dark movies ... and more than especially ... Superhero movies ... you'll always think this : This Is One Great Movie I've Ever Seen. This is the Movie Of The Year.
This is THE DARK NIGHT.
For a self proclaimed superhero enthusiast, and more enthusiastic about Batman.. this movie is not only a treat for the mind, but a treat that encompasses all you feel about Him. This is a masterpiece. Cinematically. Theoritically. Emotionally. And from every other aspect you could think of.
Why this movie is so special? What is so great about this movie? Why it is not just any other superhero or cartoon movie? The answers are endless. The answers are fanatic. The answers are vivacious and outrageous.
Because this is one movie that changes even the not-s-much-fan-of-cartoon-characters mindset, and propells them into believing in the spirit of Gotham, and the dark side of nature, in the presence of The Dark Knight.
Let's lay down the facts one by one.
I'll think about any other Batman movie first. Yes. The guys who donned the cape before.
Michael Keaton > Smart. Sexy. Intense. And somehow closer to the mind of Bruce Wayne.
Val Kilmer > Smart, Sexy again. But not Batman. He is a rugged looking scoundrel who could be anything, but not Dark Knight.
George Clooney > Messed up the part. You can trust this actor with any role in this world, but ove4rlook the fact that how he screwed Him up.
Then came the one. Who was made to be the One. The true, the dark, the intense, the sublime, the scared and scary... Christian Bale. One guy who changed the way people looked at Batman.
Movie wise, Batman movies are always revered. Not the one where Arnie played Freeze, and Clooney the Batman. That was a movie which made us think it's good not to see batman movies on screen again. Christopher Nolan changed that with his thoughts.
The previous movies were comical, to sday the word. Because it is a comic book movie anyway !! The villains were funny in their own way. If you see Danny De Vito as Penguin, you'll probably think what the hell is he doing, despite the fact he excelled in that character, and in that fat suit. Jack Nicholson's Joker was a masterpiece all time. That chilling yet witty presence !! Jim Carrey tried hard to be the Riddler, Tommy Lee Jones as Two face. But again, all of them were so comical, not real. Because Gotham City is not real. Neither is Bruce Wayne. Neither is Joker or Two face or Scarcrow.
That notion, was about to be changed.
Batman movies are entertainment. Popcorn movies. The superheroe saves the day, fights the bad men. And throws witty lines in between. A larger than life character fighting larger than life villains. That is pop culture. That is Hollywood extravaganza. That is movie.
This is mayhem.
Batman Begins. Much more human. Much more troubled. Much darker than he ever was. A childhood that never was explored so dilligently. Fears, those were never touched upon. Dreams and nightmares swarmed in. And Christian Bale showed a face that looked rugged, troubled. tormented, strong yet vulnerable. First time Batman was seen as a man, not as a superhero. A man, who has his own insecurites, own dillemmas, own paranoias. And it was the beginning of a new journey.
Much more darker than it could ever be. The villain, Scarcrow, wasn't some lumberjack jumping and hopping like a disoriented clown and pretending to destroy the world. He was real. So cruel, and on your a subtle hideousness. So was Liam Neeson.
Batman Begins was the first chapter that started this mayhem. A mayhem that years later bursted into my senses, not because it was back again, not because there was Heath Ledger, not because of all the Oscar rumours, but because, Batman is more darker than you could ever believe Him to be. he is not your cartoon hero out of the Marvel pages, he is so much of flesh and blood and foolishness and falts, he could be you. But you can't be Him.
This is a masterpiece less of Bale, but more of Ledger. Forget the Oscar rumours. Forget his acting as the gay cowboy. Forget he OD'ed himself to death.
Remember Him, only for this one thing. The sinister, the perilious, the fantastic portrait of Joker, His arch enemy.
That look he gave, is not of chilling fear. It's only half of it. There is his agony. His ecstacy. His pains and his brilliance. Amd cut lips from where the words come out with so much struggle you'd want him to stop. But , he had that look, that gives you an epiphany and you start to believe in God, and in his capability as an actor. So much to the point that you could throw yourself at his feel and be his worshipper.
Have you seen the way the spits came out of his cut lips, and the way he stopped to slurr it up !!! Move your head out of the trance, this is one movie where you'll see more than you could ever think of, more than your intelligence could capture.
Nolan has to be a genius. I mean what do you need to prove that Batman is a flesh and blood !!! he is not the man behind black suits with extraordinary gizmos to save his ass !!! No he is not. He knows fear. he knows insecurities. he knows scepticism. He knows cynicism. But what he doesn't know is what he is. And that's where Bale shines out as a distorted soul. Rest of it is Nolan's excellence. His story telling. His camera angles.
The most part was completed by the actors when they donned their respective suits. They became so real, that you might see thir cuts and feel the blood.
That is not a movie. It is a violent subordination of my senses. And the realization that became The Dark Knight.
If you'r sceptic about watching this movie, and consider yourself of much higher pier of moviedom, you better get a hold on yourself, coz you're missing a masterpiece, that might not be imitated again. Because when you take a subject like Batman, everyone wants an entertainer. But instead if you give them a gift that might explode their visual intelligence, that is an onslaught.
Go ahead, enjoy being slaughtered.
